The New Covenant

Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “All of you drink it, for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.” Mat 26:27-28

Such confidence we have through Christ toward God, not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Cor 3:4-6

If the old, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which makes us right with God! For the glory of the old has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory of the new. 2 Cor 3:9-10

But now Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which is established on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Heb 8:6-7

By calling this covenant ‘new’, he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear. Heb 8:13

Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised. Heb 9:13-15a
